Anarchists have done positive things in history

by Eli Scott
2010 May 07

Having read the articles about the vandalism on May 1, I believe a response is in order.

There is a tendency to lump all anarchists together and caricature them as being against organization and devoid of social mores. The opposite is actually true.

As anarchists, we are against coercive control, not organization; to empower individuals with a group rather than at the expense of the group. Anarchism is about empowerment of communities.

Accountability holds a spot in our hearts; accountability which responds organically rather than rigidly allowing for loopholes and abuse. Anarchists are a diverse group of people who run the gamut when it comes to ideology, and it would be a shame to let all of the positive things anarchists have done be ignored. The eight‐hour workday. The ACLU. The free‐speech movement in the ʻ60s. Being on the forefront of the battle against fascists during World War Ⅱ.

To cite a more local example, anarchists' ideas have been key contributors to the local food and co‐operative movements.

Historian and author Howard Zinn was an anarchist; Noam Chomsky is one too. Leo Tolstoy, Henry David Thoreau, Mother Jones. All were anarchists and have left a legacy of building a better future.
