Broken video submission link

Jump to: navigation, search

Ok, The new URL will be http://www.freedomporn.org/mediasubmission.php I'll change the links to it now. But it's a very ugly hack that only does 1/2 of the upload process. It basically needs to be rewritten completely as the MediaWiki plugin plus some extra scripts.

VolodyA! V Anarhist (talk)19:55, 11 November 2014

I just tried it, but I don't know if it worked. Is this section supposed to be for my username instead of actual name? "Your name (as it will be present on the site)"

AkrystaKore (talk)03:27, 12 November 2014

If you've tried to upload anything, then it didn't work.

The name should be your username. I agree that the whole thing is uglier than hell.

VolodyA! V Anarhist (talk)06:07, 12 November 2014

Okay, tried again using my username, and I still don't see anything new on the wiki. Did you test the new submission form to make sure it works? Can I just use the advanced upload form like it says on the Help:uploading page?

AkrystaKore (talk)08:22, 12 November 2014

Ok, the way the script is suppose to play out is the following:

  1. You fill out the fields and select the file.
  2. Press upload, it puts the file on the server.
  3. It presents you with the information that you need to save on the page.
  4. You press preview and see how the page will look like.
  5. You press save.

It appears to me that something broke at the first stage for you, since there is no file on the server (i just checked). I have checked the form for myself and i can get at least to the place where the file is uploaded (i just don't want to save the page with rubbish that i've entered as the test).

When you press 'Send' button, what do you see? If the file is larger than a few kilobytes you should at least see that there is an upload in progress.

If you see the form just refreshing itself, then the problem is probably that no file was selected at all.

VolodyA! V Anarhist (talk)13:04, 12 November 2014

When I hit send, it seems like at waits a while for the upload to complete, but then after a while it simply refreshes. I definitely selected a file.

AkrystaKore (talk)19:30, 12 November 2014

What's the size of the file? I'll try again with the same size.

VolodyA! V Anarhist (talk)20:12, 12 November 2014

Not large. 46.9 MB

WebM file containing VP9 video and Opus audio

AkrystaKore (talk)20:23, 12 November 2014

Found the problem, but it ended up to be more serious than i though. I will try to resolve it tomorrow.

Sorry for the problems, and thanks for finding the issue and helping to debug it.

Have you seen these links? They may be helpful:

AkrystaKore (talk)22:58, 12 November 2014

Thanks, this will help in the future, but not for now. The videos are not stored on the same server at all, doing so would make it impossible to sustain the site financially. If you notice the video download links all go to download.freedomporn.org, and that's what we are talking about here. So in a "perfect world" we need something which would

  1. Get the user to fill everything in and upload the file
  2. Convert the file if it needs to be converted
  3. Put the file on the download servert
  4. Insert the page onto mediawiki

The current crap version did just step 1, then prefilled the form for the user to just press save to do step 4, and emailed me to do 2 and 3 manually. It wasn't a great solution, but right now even that isn't working. So what i'm going to do today is setup upload.freedomporn.org on the same server where the download lies, put the script there and do some quick cosmetic changes to it (allow more licences, since currently it only has FAL and public domain) and change it to a "wizzard" format, where it's not a single form, but rather something that breaks the process down in several steps. Also the wording was horrible and needs to be redone.

Anyhow. Something will be working today... i hope.

"Thanks, this will help in the future, but not for now. The videos are not stored on the same server at all"

That is exactly what those links are about. Using a CDN / different server to host files.

AkrystaKore (talk)08:02, 13 November 2014

No. These links are about loading the content that's already somewhere else from Mediawiki, not about uploading to an external server from within MW. That's a different problem, currently resolved by extra namespaces Video: Audio: etc and templates, i don't think it's a good idea to collapse everything under File: once again.

VolodyA! V Anarhist (talk)08:39, 13 November 2014

Ohhhh, i see! Keep me posted on updating the submission script then

AkrystaKore (talk)08:59, 13 November 2014

Ok, after trying to fix the old script i've realised that it'd bee too much time spent on it that could be better spent making Special:SubmissionUpload better. So i've tried that. Now there is a video category for it.

Currently it says "do not use" but that's just because i cannot guarantee that nothing wrong will happen with it. If you wish to test it, please do. Do not be afraid of an empty window with the "Save" button, it's intentional, just press that button. Eventually this saving will be done automatically, but it'll require lots of reading and learning on my part, so this was a quick way to do this.

When you'll save, if everything goes well you'll see the page on Freedom Porn. It will say that you haven't yet uploaded, but do not worry, if you got that far it has uploaded, there's just no other way about it. Eventually this will be done automatically (this part is actually kind of easy, but i'm very tired already... have been working on this for the better part of today).

If there are any issues (even if they're just typos or somesuch) that you notice. Please let me know. After spending so much time with my nose in the code it can be very difficult to look at the end result as if i was a first time user trying to figure stuff out.

P.S. While working on this i've hacked in the licence and production date into the submission upload, although it's currently not reading what licence templates are currently available (i've just chosen a few and put in the HTML manually). But the choices do make a difference, and you will end up with the correct licence ... i hope. q;-)=

I tried the form and after uploading for some time it goes to this page which doesn't load and immediately says "The connection was reset":

http://download.freedomporn.org/upload/receive.php

Checking the recent changes/additions, nothing appears to be there.

AkrystaKore (talk)21:08, 13 November 2014

Ohhhh Keeyyyy

I think i see what is going on. I've increased the maximum size of the allowed files to 500Meg, yours was 47007796 bytes, and it got over the limit, i have made it 10 times more, hopefully this will finally resolve the problem.

VolodyA! V Anarhist (talk)21:30, 13 November 2014

Okay, this time i get to the same url, but instead of a connection reset error, it says "You are probably here by mistake! Did you intend to be here?" with a link back to the submission upload page. nothing new appears in recent changes/additions

AkrystaKore (talk)00:35, 14 November 2014

Ok, changed every single configuration that talks about the maximum size of the interaction between the client and the server. And also tested with the file that i've created which was 42 meg of size. Now i believe that things should work out.

If they do not, let me know. There will also be output of $_POST and $_FILES arrays written on the page, don't worry about it (unless something goes wrong, and then let me know what that output was.)

VolodyA! V Anarhist (talk)09:56, 14 November 2014

It finally worked! Please do not re-encode as it is already using newest generation HTML5 codecs VP9 and Opus

AkrystaKore (talk)18:37, 14 November 2014

Personally i would recommend not using VP9 yet, but it's free enough not to require reencoding. I did have to rename the file, because the server was freaking out about the non-latin characters in the name. The page name, of course, is quite ok.
