protectionism

Protectionism is the philosophy claiming that people do not actually know what it is that they want, that peopleʼs experiences and desires are somehow flawed and evil and the people need to be “protected” for their own good.

When it comes to sexuality some “moral crusaders” believe that pornography, homosexuality, BDSM (or other things that do not conform to the view of the way the world is suppose to be) are evil and must be eradicated. These crusaders often will claim that when the so-called “victims” come out and outright say that they are equal participants and not abused, that it is all “false consciousness” or even worse they begin to attack those who they claim to defend.

Radical feminism

Unfortunately some of the protectionists use the term “radical feminists” to refer to themselves. It should be noted that not all the radical feminists are anti-sex, actually quite a lot are very much pro-sexuality and pro-free-speech, but often they are shouted down and not heard in this anti-sex society we live in. Also one must understand that these “radical feminists” are not actually radical, but in fact quite fundamentalist in their attitudes, therefore on Freedom Porn you will see them called fundamentalist radical feminists (or even just fundamentalist feminists) to differentiate them from the true radicals who support the freedom.

In XXX: A Women's Right to Pornography Wendy McElroy writes:

I wondered if feminists who attack prostitutes as psychological incompetents had ever met women in the industry-not the victims who flee, but the majority who stay. I wondered if I could ever again blithely exhort sex workers to "stand up for yourself" when I now knew they could lose their children for following my advice. How many times through history have women had to defend themselves against self-proclaimed “protectors”? By defining myself as an advocate of sex worker's rights-a protector-wasn't I placing myself on a higher level than these “unfortunate” women?
Maybe sex workers are like every other type of women in our society. Maybe they just need a bit of respect. It's a lesson I'm still learning. [1]

Religious fanaticism

Quite often religious fundamentalists claim that they are protecting those who are weak. The whole idea of removing the freedom of women in Islam, for example, is to protect women from the male sexuality (women are forced to hide themselves behind walls, clothes, husbands, and fathers). Religious fanatics often claim to represent all the individuals who are of that religion or even all those who subscribe to a specific spirituality, most of the time it is completely wrong (these people represent only their own twisted bigotry). Freedom Porn supports expressions of spirituality which are open to the diversity; and welcomes all anarchists, regardless of their beliefs, provided that they don't attempt to force those beliefs onto others.

Child sadvocates

Child sadvocates attempt to high-jack the idea of helping children (the noble pursuit) for their own goal of banning something that they don't like. Claiming to be pro-homosexuality as long as children do not know that it exists or demanding that sexuality, pornography, and self-expression is withheld from those under some arbitrary age are two quite prominent examples of the tactics child sadvocates use. Sometimes child sadvocates even attempt (but quite poorly) to jump on the bandwagon of child rights, but can easily be spotted when they refuse to listen to that which children tell them. Freedom Porn in theory supports the abolition of ageism and of the concept of age being a determinant of a personʼs worth and maturity; but unfortunately the site will be shut down if the support will become more than theoretical (for example, there is an age warning before a person can enter the site), thus for now we are looking to children to lead this struggle, as it is their freedom that we are struggling for.

Hidden bigotry

The following is the quote from the anti-pornography ordinance in Indianapolis:

“Children are incapable of consenting to engage in pornographic conduct.... By the same token, the physical and psychological well-being of women ought to be afforded comparable protection, for the coercive environment ... vitiates any notion that they consent or ‘choose’ to perform in pornography.”

Not only is it degrading to children (as they are presented as the absolute when it comes to having to mind), but then it puts women into that category as well.

Many politicians during the slavery times in the USA argued that black people would be unable to survive in a complex world if the slave owners would not feed them.

But such sentiments are not limited to the government as the agent, many groups or individuals find it easy to hide their bigotry behind protectionism as a shield. Child sadvocates (mentioned above) are only one such example.

Populist politicians

Often populist politicians spew the propaganda of protectionism in order to gain support for something which would otherwise be easily spotted as an evil and unethical thing. Prisons, censorship, bigotry are just some of the things which can be excused by protectionism, even wars are often fought to “protect” those who are getting killed (W. has declared that people of Afghanistan needed to be killed for their freedom, for example). When it comes to sexuality populist politicians will use the other protectionist and anti-freedom forces to get support for their agenda or (at times) to divert the discussion away from their real agenda. Freedom Porn is an anarchist site, so it opposes populism in politics on two fronts simultaneously.
