sexual content is not for Wikimedia Commons

From Freedom Porn
Jump to: navigation, search

Wikimedia Commons is the repository of free works which educational sites can use. Mostly it is used for Wikipedia, but others are free to plug themselves in and receive media directly from commons (provided they do it via API or other means which don't violate copyright).

However, recently there is a push towards removing sexual content from Commons. Currently there is a discussion going on about the proposed policy that would make it much harder to post sexual content on there.

You are urged to voice your opposition to this policy. Please do not simply write "oppose" but actually explain in depth why it is that you oppose this policy. Some things that you may want to mention are:

  1. Commons is being used by other sites, and different sites educate their visitors about different things. And sometimes these things may be sexual.
  2. Supporting the policy because those who oppose it often do so from the political and moral stand-point is a political issue in itself.
  3. Commons is an international portal, and basing everything strictly on the laws of the USA is very America-centric.
  4. Much of the educational media is already under the threat of deletion, and yet the policy does nothing to safeguard those media.
  5. Whether or not an image of video is educational can only be judged together with the article it's used in. Deleting the "non-educational" image can prove detrimental to the person who is writing an article about the specific issue.
  6. Right not to be offended is a very weak right, and should never trump the freedom of speech.

New developments

The pole was closed and really quickly archived (without being allowed to sit there for even 24 hours). The decision was deadlocked with slightly more votes in opposition. Please watch this page for developments.

The proposal now is marked as having achieved no consensus, however, the discussion may erupt again some time. Keep watching out!
